Building a Stronger Sylvan Lake Community

Updated: Sep 7, 2025

I Love this town!

Sylvan Lake is a beautiful place to live, work, and play. The town draws people in with its stunning views, friendly atmosphere and ¨cool¨ factor. Like any community however, it needs our help to ensure that we keep thriving.

Together, we can create a stronger, closer, safer Sylvan Lake community.

Whether you are a long-time resident or new to the area, there is something for everyone.

The Importance of Community Engagement

Community engagement is one of my favorite things when it comes to thinking of running for council. It is vital for any town. It brings people together and fosters a sense of belonging. When we engage with one another, we build trust and understanding. We feel more connected and safer. It gets a lot easier to be friendlier and work together. This leads to a more vibrant community.

Here are some benefits of community engagement:

  • Stronger Relationships: Meeting neighbors and participating in local events helps us form bonds. We are far more likely to go out and use our local businesses if we love engaging with each other.

  • Shared Resources: When we support each other, financially, emotionally and collectively - together we will thrive and grow.

  • Improved Quality of Life: A connected community often has better access to services and amenities. We have a great quality of life in Sylvan and we can keep improving on it.

By engaging with our community, we can create a supportive environment for everyone.

Volunteer Opportunities

One of the best ways to get involved is through volunteering. Sylvan Lake has many organizations that need help. Whether you have a few hours or can commit long-term, your time is valuable.

Some volunteer ideas we could enhance, could be:

  • working with organisations that provide food and necessities for people struggling.

  • Community clean up events and safety/block watches.

  • Mentoring and tutoring our local youth. Creating job opportunities for our youth.

Volunteering not only helps others but also enriches your own life. You will meet new people and learn more about our community.

Local Events to Attend

Attending local events is another great way to connect with others. Sylvan Lake hosts various events throughout the year. These gatherings are perfect for meeting new friends and enjoying what our town has to offer.

Some popular events include:

  • Sylvan Lake Farmers Market: Support our local neighbors and vendors. Fresh food, crafts, and collectible items weekly.

  • Concert events: Relax and enjoy live music in the park with family and friends.

  • Festivals and Sporting events: Celebrate our town’s teams and history with fun activities for all ages.

Supporting Local Businesses

Supporting local businesses is essential for a thriving community. When we shop locally, we help our neighbors and keep money within our community. This, in turn, creates jobs and boosts the local economy.

Here are some ways to support local businesses:

  • Shop Local: I get it, it isn't always possible (or financially feasible) to buy local. But I always try to choose local stores over big-box retailers whenever possible.

  • Dine at Local Restaurants and pubs: Enjoy a meal at a nearby café or restaurant locally, instead of chain establishments for every meal.

  • Promote Local Services: Got a great company or service in town? Share your favorite local businesses on social media or recommend them to neighbors.

By supporting local businesses, we contribute to a vibrant economy and help our community flourish.

Creating Community Spaces

Community spaces have proven to be a great way of bringing people together. Parks, playgrounds, and community centers provide places for people to gather and connect.

Here are some ideas for enhancing our community spaces:

  • Community Gardens or Man shed: Create a space where residents can grow their own food and share gardening tips. Men can meet and support each other with valuable skills.

  • Meet ups: Install exercise equipment in parks to encourage physical activity. Walking and kayak meet ups and coffee/book club meets at the one of the great coffee places in town.

  • Art Installations: Collaborate with local artists to create murals or sculptures that reflect our community’s spirit.

By investing in our community spaces, we create environments that foster connection and well-being.

Encouraging Inclusivity

A strong community is one that embraces diversity and inclusivity. Everyone should feel welcome and valued, regardless of their background.

Engaging with Local Government

Engagement with local government is vital for making our voices heard. Attend town hall meetings and participate in discussions about community issues with ideas and curiosity.

Here are some ways to get involved:

  • Stay Informed and connected: Follow local news and updates from the town council.

  • Voice Your Opinions: Share your thoughts on community projects and initiatives. This doesnt have to be a conflict. Respectful communication, with open minded and active listening can create amazing results.

  • Participate in events: Join committees that focus on issues you care about, such as parks, safety, or education/children.

By engaging with local government, we can influence decisions that affect our community.

Building a Stronger Future Together

As we start working together to build a stronger Sylvan Lake, let’s remember that every small action counts. Whether you volunteer, attend events, or support local businesses, your efforts make a difference.

Crowd of people gather in a sunny park, lush green grass in focus, blurry background with trees and tents, creating a vibrant, warm atmosphere.
